Volleyball is an RHP Trademark

Football was the centerpiece of last week’s Interleaguer but this week the word is “Volleyball”. Specifically, Kare Youth League and Rio Hondo Prep volleyball. Last week, for the fourth time in a row,  the RHP girls won “The Battle of the Wash” over Arroyo High School, which is in El Monte just on the other side of the wash basin from Kare in Arcadia. The starting squad is pictured below along with which younger girls they assist in Kare. Girls in Kare Youth League from 2nd to 4th grade (Karenas) as well as 5th and 6th  grade (Pac Five) compete each week, improving their skills, with big goals in mind. The Karenas will soon be adding cheerleading to their reputore as well. We are looking forward to a great season!

Kare’s Rich Football Tradition

Kare Youth League was one of the first organizations in Southern California to play tackle football. Over the course of 50-plus years Kare football has turned out some outstanding teams and produced quite a few fine ball players. Rio Hondo Prep, with teams comprised of boys who played in KYL as youngsters, played in last year’s CIF championship game and has played in a total of 19 CIF championship games since the school opened in 1964. Friday, September 10 they defeated Big Bear 22-12 to start the season off right. Friday, September 24 they will face perennial power Boron at home at 7:30.  In addition to RHP’s success, former Kare members continue to excel on the gridiron at other area high schools.  KYL alums also shine in the collegiate ranks. There are a host of alums playing at local junior colleges and small universities in addition to several playing NCAA ball (3 UCLA players are former Kare standouts). A good chance to catch the current stock of great KYL football players will be at the Future Bowl on November 10 and championships on December 4.
